The Roman Aquila
The Aquila, Latin for eagle, was the sacred emblem of the Roman Legions and the insignia that they carried into battle - the eagle on the pole
Aquila Heights Guest House has panoramic views of Maiden Castle Iron Age hill fort. This was the tribal capital of the Durotriges until the Roman invasion of Britain in AD 43
It is thought that the future Roman Emperor Vespasian and his Augusta Legion would have set up base camp by the river on the site of modern Dorchester from which to launch his assault across the valley that Aquila Heights Guest House now overlooks Maiden Castle Iron Age hill-fort 350BC, Maumbury Rings roman amphitheatre, the Roman Town House and Poundbury hill fort: are all within walking distance of Aquila Heights Guest House

Roman Town House
Train and Coach Stations, Dorset County Hospital, Dorset County Records Office, Thomas Hardye Leisure Centre and Poundbury, Prince Charles’s vision of Britain are all within walking distance
Dorset County Museum : Tutankhamen Exhibition - The Keep, Military Museum - Old Crown Court and Cells - Dinosaur Museum - Teddy Bear House - Terracotta Warriors - Dorchester Borough Gardens and a multitude of individual shops and eating places are all within the town centre.
You can even preview your visit on Virtual Dorchester
A lovely riverside and woodland walk or a short drive to Thomas Hardy’s Cottage at Higher Bockhampton and his Church near Kingston Maurward at Stinsford.
Athelhampton House – Kingston Maurward - Monkey World at Wool - Tank Museum - Bovington - Tolpuddle Martyrs with its Martyrs Museum at Tolpuddle – and Brownsea Island are all worth visiting
Neighbouring towns like Sherborne, Bridport, Weymouth and Wareham are all very quaint and friendly and have their own outdoor market days.
Historical Sherborne has the Old and New Castles
A little further but well worth the journey or to visit en route is the Fleet Air Arm Museum at Yeovilton with Haynes Motor Museum nearby at Sparkford.
